Chapter Five

I wake up the next morning slowly, remembering Matthew and how he felt with me and next to me. My mind slowly replays the evening and I sit in the deliciousness of it. My eyes snap open all the way when I remember what he had said about his age. What did that even mean? I pad to the kitchen to make coffee. Matthew had set up the coffee maker and programmed it to brew for 9 am. It is 9:20 right now and there is fresh, hot coffee waiting for me. I never program the machine; I always forgot and it used to drive Jordan nuts. He never did it either but the expectation, I suppose, was that I do it. I never did.

I sit sipping my coffee and thinking about Matthew. On my desk there is an envelope with his signature swirling writing. There is no seal this time and it appears to have been written with a regular Bic pen. My Bic pen by the looks of it. I open it, excited and apprehensive at the same time.

“Dear Nick:

Last night was fantastic and I am so glad we finally connected. I’ll see you tonight at dusk.

Love, Matthew”

I read it again and wonder about my mysterious lover. My mind drifts to vampires and the paranormal. I loved reading that stuff as a kid. But they can’t actually be real… can they? My mind goes back to the whole evening and how he felt inside me, how he felt as he kissed me. He had a cool feeling, different from anyone I had been with before. Different than anyone I had hugged before as well. I tried to remember feeling his heart beating and couldn’t. I contemplated this for several hours and by the time dusk arrived I was wondering if I was losing my mind.

Matthew shows up at dusk as promised and lets himself in the window. He seems more animated tonight than usual and when he hugs me, he is more forceful than before. His skin feels warmer as well.

“You seem, uh, animated tonight.” I scramble for words to make sense of what I am seeing.

“I just ate. Probably gave me energy.” He says flippantly.

“Oh. I just had dinner as well. Did the opposite for me. Of course, I ate way more carbs than normal and didn’t run. What did you have?” I regret asking as soon as it is out of my mouth.

“The usual. Blood.” Matthew smiles at my discomfort as he says it. His eyes are not unkind, but I can see the power he has in them tonight. He is not shielding it from me as he has been. I feel dread rising in my mind and back up against the wall, fearful. I open my mouth, certain I am going to tell him to leave or scream and before I can get a noise out, he is across the room and has a hand over my mouth. He also lifted me off the floor with one arm.
